Blockhawk understands the number of “new” residents in the city and their general inability to find cool and memorable events in New York City beyond the multiple apartment pregame events and the weekend adventures at the city’s favored night spots.

Unless you neglected to step outside your apartment in the past week, you’ve likely noticed that Papa Winter is on his way. Though the arrival of frigid air does mean that the annoying trend of paying a few extra dollars for coat check and for weekend cab rides has begun, it also signals far more beautiful reality: Ice Skating!

In Manhattan, there are a number of areas where New Yorkers of all skating skill levels can enjoy themselves on the ice. The most famous of these options is the ice rink at Rockefeller Plaza, which opened on the 4th of November. This ice rink is conveniently located in the dead center of the island and is in between major subway lines (D,B, 4,5,6).

Next up on the list of Manhattan outdoor skating rinks in Midtown is Citi Pond at Bryant Park. Citi Pond (located just off of the D,B,7,4, 5,6 train lines) offers a number of entertainment and culinary options. Thus, even for those not looking to skate, this is an excellent leisure space.

One other option for those looking for winter wonderland in Midtown is the Wollamn ice rink in the South part of Central Park (just west of Columbus Circle and the East 59th street stop). This much larger in ice space than both Rockefeller rink and Citi Pond.

Further north, there is Lasker Ice Rink at one 110 Street, located on the Central Harlem Side of Central Park just off the 2,3 train line.  Lasker offers far better prices than the previously mentioned rinks and a far less crowded environment.

So yes, as Winter 2011-2012 approaches, you will spend more money on coat check, cabs, and heat. However, you can also spend on a far more enjoyable activity: ice skating!

And unlike many of your winter related expenditures, an hour rental of skates and ice time will bring life to your living experience in Manhattan and very memorable holiday experiences, which should extend far beyond the square footage of your new condo.
